Psoralea corylifolia uses

Effects on cardiovascular system

A chalcone (psoralen herein) in the fruit of Psoralea can dilate coronary vessels in isolated hearts of guinea pigs, rabbits, cats, and rats, and its effect is four times stronger than that of Kaylin and can counteract the contraction effect of the posterior pituitary hormone on coronary arteries; however, it has little effect on total peripheral vascular resistance, indicating that it dilates coronary arteries with high selectivity. Derivatives of psoralen can increase blood flow in canine coronary arteries and peripheral vessels. Psoralen B also enhances cardiac contractility in guinea pigs and rats, excites frog hearts, and counteracts lactic acid-induced heart failure in frog hearts. It does not increase myocardial oxygen consumption significantly, but increases respiratory quotient, has little effect on myocardial oxidative phosphorylation, intracardiac glycogen, and lactate, and therefore does not promote anaerobic metabolism within the myocardium. Toxicity is very low with slow administration.

Antibacterial effects

Bu Gu Zhi seed extract has an inhibitory effect on staphylococci in the test tube as well as staphylococci resistant to penicillin and other antimicrobials; bone marrow has a certain effect on mold in Schaefer's medium, and the tincture is stronger than the decoction. The petroleum ether extract of the seeds has an inhibitory effect on earthworms, so it may have an anthelmintic effect.

Bu Gu Zhi vitiligo

Psoralea corylifolia vitiligo
The crude extract of Bu Gu Zhi can treat vitiligo and psoriasis, which can be applied topically and taken internally. It is now known that its active ingredient is psoralen, which has very little toxicity and requires a large dose to form a teratogen (rat and guinea pig experiments). The extract from the seeds of P. leguminous, a plant of the same genus, has a photosensitizing effect on rabbits and can treat vitiligo.

Effect on smooth muscle

The seed extract of psoralea corylifolia has an excitatory effect on isolated and in situ intestinal tubes and relaxes in isolated guinea pig uterus.

Estrogen-like effects

Daily administration of 0.35 g or 0.175 g of dried psoralen seed powder (mixed in the diet) to female rats (ovariectomized and normal rats) increased vaginal keratinization, which was reversible. 0.25 g caused a vaginal opening in immature females, but this estrogen-like effect was extremely weak, and psoralen did not have this effect; feeding 0.35 g of seed powder for 37-77 days injured fertility in adult females, but This effect was not observed in male rats fed with 0.35 g of seeds for 46 days.

Psoralea corylifolia side effects

Psoralenol 0.125, 0.25, 0.5, 1.0 ml/kg (equivalent to 75 g of original drug per ml) by gavage for 7 days showed selective vegetative toxicity to the kidney of mice with slow recovery. A high dose of psoralen-like plus UV light irradiation can cause slight fatty changes in the liver, genitalia, adrenal cortex, testicular atrophy, and weight loss in mice.

Treatment of uterine bleeding

We have observed more than 300 cases of hemostasis with the internal use of Bu Gu Zhi and red stone resin productions, and the effect of hemostasis is over 90%. However, for patients with prolonged or excessive bleeding, other hemostatic measures need to be used. For bleeding diseases in other parts of the body, such as hemophilia, nasal bleeding, upper gastrointestinal ulcer bleeding, etc., the hemostatic effect has also been seen after individual trials. Formulation and usage: It is prepared by rolling tablets with equal amounts of bone marrow extract (1:4) and hematoxylin. Start taking the medicine when the menstrual flow tends to increase, 6 tablets (1 yuan) each time, 3 times a day for 3 days, or longer if necessary. According to animal experiments, the effective component of this medicine to stop bleeding is mainly in the bone marrow. Bone marrow has a more obvious effect of shortening the bleeding time and reducing the bleeder; at the same time, it has an obvious contraction effect on the uterus, while red stone resin has no obvious effect on the contraction of the uterus. It is assumed that the hemostatic effect of this product on excessive menstrual bleeding may be due to the drug promoting the contraction of uterine smooth muscle and reducing the amount of bleeding.

Treatment of psoriasis

Use 100% Bu Gu Zhi solution for intramuscular injection, 2.5 to 3 ml once daily. Add antihistamines or topical medication for those with itching or chapping. Of the 120 cases observed, 29 cases (24.2%) were clinically cured (rash disappeared, close to healthy skin), 48 cases (40%) were apparently effective (rash mostly disappeared), 33 cases (27.5%) were effective (rash partially disappeared), and 10 cases (8.3%) were ineffective. There was a relationship between the type of skin lesions and the efficacy. The efficacy was better in the case of lesions in the form of droplets (mostly generalized, thin, and progressive) and worse in the case of oyster shells or patches (scattered and hypertrophic lesions, mostly in the stationary or regressive phase). In the children's group, the lesions were mostly pan-dotted, short-lived, and in the progressive stage, and the efficacy was most prominent. It was observed that after about 10 injections, the pruritus was reduced, the skin flakes were peeled off and the rash was reduced; after 20 to 40 injections, the efficacy was more obvious. Discontinuation of treatment can be considered if 40-60 injections are ineffective. No adverse reactions were found in the treatment. In addition, there were 148 cases treated with 50% Psoralea corylifolia injection of 5 ml intramuscularly once a day, together with ultraviolet radiation (once a day, starting from 2 minutes and gradually increasing to 10 minutes; after 15 times, it was changed to once every other day or twice a week, and it can be stopped after a month); the results were 103 cases of clinical recovery, 26 cases of significant effect, 16 cases of effective, and 3 cases of ineffective. The results were clinically cured in 103 cases, effective in 26 cases, effective in 16 cases and ineffective in 3 cases. But after a few months most cases relapse, such as re-treatment is still effective.

Treatment of vitiligo

Inject with 50% Bu Gu Zhi injection intramuscularly, 5 ml once a day; apply topical Psoralea corylifolia solution to localized white spots (start with the small area). At the same time with ultraviolet radiation, the beginning of 2 minutes, gradually increased to 10 minutes; if sunlight, according to the intensity of light, sunlight 5 ~ 20 minutes. If local redness and blistering occur, treatment should be suspended and reapplied after recovery. Face, hands, and other exposed parts, and selenium should be washed away after the drug. Generally, it can be applied continuously for several months or more than six months. For the face, hands, and feet exposed parts, the effect is slower. Observed 49 cases, after 3-6 months, 6 cases were cured (pigment completely recovered), 8 cases were effective (2/3 recovered pigment), 23 cases were effective (partially recovered pigment), and 12 cases were invalid. In addition, there were 7 cases treated with 30% alcohol infusion of bone marrow alone, which also obtained different degrees of efficacy. It is believed that the psoralen contained in this product has the effect of making the pigment new.

Treatment of baldness

Bu Gu Zhi hair loss
Intramuscular injection of 50% Bu Gu Zhi injection, 5 ml once a day; simultaneous ultraviolet radiation, gradually increasing from 2 minutes each time to 10 minutes, and resting for 2 weeks after 15 times before illumination. Forty-five cases were observed, and after 3-6 months, 16 cases were cured (complete recovery of hair), 18 cases were effective (basic recovery of hair), 4 cases were effective (partial recovery of hair), and 7 cases were ineffective.

Treatment of ringworm of finger and toe nails

Bu Gu Zhi is used in combination with an equal amount of Cuscuta sinensis to make an injection solution, which can be injected intramuscularly 5 ml once a day for several months. In 4 cases, 2 cases were cured (blisters and scales disappeared, finger/toe nails recovered, and bacteria were tested negative), and 2 cases were effective (blisters and scales disappeared, and finger/toe nails recovered by more than 2/3). Generally, multiple injections over a long period of time are required to achieve results.
