What is Mu Dan Pi?

Mu Dan Pi is a Chinese traditional medicine name. It is the dried root bark of the peony, family Buttercup. Produced in Anhui, Sichuan, Henan, Shandong, and other places. Bitter, pungent, and slightly cold, belongs to the heart, liver, and kidney meridians, with the effect of clearing heat and cooling the blood, activating blood circulation, and reducing deficiency heat.

Yuan Dan Pi

The root bark is cylindrical and semi-cylindrical, with longitudinal dissected cracks, both sides curled inward, usually 3-8 cm long and about 2 mm thick. The outer surface is gray-brown or purplish brown, some cork has fallen off, brown-red, visible root traces and raised lenticels; the inner surface is light brown or gray-yellow, with longitudinal fine texture and shiny crystalline material. The texture is hard and brittle, and the cross-section is not flat, or show powder, light yellow and slightly red. A special aroma, taste slightly bitter and astringent, slightly numb tongue feeling.

Gua Dan Pi

The surface is slightly brown, and pink. Others are the same as the Yuan Dan Pi.

Mu Dan Pi benefits

a. Mudanpi is good at clearing the Blood and invigorating it, so it has the effect of cooling the Blood and dispersing stasis, making the Blood flow smoothly without leaving stasis, and clearing the Blood heat without delusion. Therefore, it is used as an important medicine in cases of incandescent blood heat, fire in the liver and kidney, and stagnation of blood. This product with fresh raw earth, can clear heat and cool the blood; with large raw earth, it nourishes the kidney and diarrhea fire; with gardenia, it clears the liver and drains heat; with red peony, and peach kernel, it activates the blood and disperses blood stasis; with lateral cypress leaf, fresh thatch root, it cools the blood and stops bleeding.

b. Mu Dan Pi is used for warm fever, heat entering the blood, high fever, vivid tongue, body rash, blood fever, vomiting blood, epistaxis, urinating blood, and Yin deficiency fever. Peony bark clears the actual heat in the Blood of the Ying and also treats Yin deficiency fever. To clear the actual heat of Blood, it is often used in combination with fresh Radix et Rhizoma and Radix Paeoniae; to treat deficiency heat, it is often used in combination with Radix et Rhizoma, Radix et Rhizoma, Artemisiae arborescent, and Turtle A. Because of its effect of removing heat and stasis, Da Huang Mu Dan Pi Tang can be used for postpartum malodorous dew, inconvenient urination, and postpartum constipation, as well as women with irregular menstruation, red and white discharge, i.e., blood in the leukorrhea.

Because the peach kernel in Rhubarb Mudanpi Tang has a blood-breaking effect, pregnant women should avoid taking it. Treatment of hypertension

Take 1~1.5 taels of peony bark, decoct it into 120~150 ml with water, and take it 3 times a day in divided doses; or use 5~6 taels for the first time, and increase it to 1 tael if there is no adverse reaction. More than 20 cases were treated, and blood pressure generally dropped significantly after taking the medicine for about 5 days. The symptoms improved; after taking the medicine for 6 to 33 days, the average diastolic blood pressure decreased by 10-20 mmHg and the average systolic blood pressure decreased by 20-40 mmHg. All of the cases in this group were able to bring the blood pressure down to the normal range or close to the normal range shortly, and the symptoms also disappeared or improved, but the long-term efficacy has to be continued to be observed. Some patients had side effects such as nausea and dizziness after taking the drug, but they can disappear naturally without stopping the drug.

Treatment of allergic rhinitis

A decoction of 10% peony bark, 50 ml of which was taken every night for 10 days as a course of treatment, was used to treat 31 cases, and 12 cases were cured. Another 9 cases were treated, and the symptoms improved quickly after taking the medicine, but no 1 case was cured.
