What is Mu Dan Pi?

Mu Dan Pi is a Chinese traditional medicine name. It is the dried root bark of the peony, family Buttercup. Produced in Anhui, Sichuan, Henan, Shandong, and other places. Bitter, pungent, and slightly cold, belongs to the heart, liver, and kidney meridians, with the effect of clearing heat and cooling the blood, activating blood circulation, and reducing deficiency heat.

Yuan Dan Pi

The root bark is cylindrical and semi-cylindrical, with longitudinal dissected cracks, both sides curled inward, usually 3-8 cm long and about 2 mm thick. The outer surface is gray-brown or purplish brown, some cork has fallen off, brown-red, visible root traces and raised lenticels; the inner surface is light brown or gray-yellow, with longitudinal fine texture and shiny crystalline material. The texture is hard and brittle, and the cross-section is not flat, or show powder, light yellow and slightly red. A special aroma, taste slightly bitter and astringent, slightly numb tongue feeling.

Gua Dan Pi

The surface is slightly brown, and pink. Others are the same as the Yuan Dan Pi.

Mu Dan Pi benefits

Take 1~1.5 taels of peony bark, decoct it into 120~150 ml with water, and take it 3 times a day in divided doses; or use 5~6 taels for the first time, and increase it to 1 tael if there is no adverse reaction. More than 20 cases were treated, and blood pressure generally dropped significantly after taking the medicine for about 5 days. The symptoms improved; after taking the medicine for 6 to 33 days, the average diastolic blood pressure decreased by 10-20 mmHg and the average systolic blood pressure decreased by 20-40 mmHg.
