What is Fu Shi?
Fu Shi, also known as
Pumice Stone, is a porous stone formed by the solidification of magma from volcanoes and is used to clear lung fire, dissolve old phlegm, induce diuresis, soften hardness, and disperse knots. It is used for coughing and asthma with thick phlegm, dripping and astringent pain in urine, and scrofula of gall tumors.

Morphological characteristics of Fu Shi
Fu Shi is a
multi-mineral aggregate. More than 90% of the mineral fraction is amorphous volcanic glass; or contains a small number of crystalline minerals, crystalline mainly feldspar, followed by quartz, pyroxene, and its change products hornblende; in addition, to fill in the mineral particles or pores, there are still secondary minerals such as zeolite. Amorphous glass constitutes a porous skeleton. The crystalline mineral feldspar is bar-columnar, slab-columnar white to off-white small crystals or fragments embedded in the glass, with quartz symbiosis of acidic volcanic pumice is mainly potassium-sodium feldspar, no quartz symbiosis of medium-basic volcanic pumice is mainly sodium-calcium feldspar. Quartz, on the other hand, is white to off-white granularly embedded in vitreous matter. Pyroxene, most of which has changed to hornblende, is blackish-brown when not deliquescent and off-white or greenish-white when deliquescent. The zeolites in pumice are all products of feldspar sensitization, white powdery, fibrous particles, or white fibrous aggregates filled in pores (stomata).
Identification of medicinal herbs about Fu Shi
Hai Fu Shi
Characteristic of the herb
Fu Shi is a loose, spongy, ovoid, irregular mass. Size varies. The surface is grayish-white or grayish-yellow, occasionally light red. Most fine pores are shaped like cavity areoles, sometimes tubular. The body is light, hard, brittle, fragile, lax in section, with small pores, often with glass or silky luster. Under the magnifying glass, the glassy skeleton is porous, and the crystalline minerals are spotted crystals or cryptocrystalline microcrystals distributed in the skeleton. Floating but not sinking when put into water. The smell is faint and the taste is slightly salty. Light body, gray color is preferred.
Tablet properties
Calcined pumice is shaped like pumice, with more powder, dark gray, crisp, and fragile. Slight odor, and a light taste.
How pumice is formed?
Fu Shi forms when superheated, pressurized molten rock erupts violently from a volcano, and when the pressure suddenly drops, gases dissolved in the magma (mainly water and carbon dioxide) form bubbles in much the same way that carbon dioxide bubbles form when you open a carbonated beverage. The magma cools rapidly, producing solid bubbles.
Although pumice can be produced by crushing pumice, it also occurs naturally. When magma containing high concentrations of dissolved gases is suddenly depressurized and cooled, fine-grained pumice is formed. Volcanic eruptions can form large beds of Fushi.
Pumice forms very rapidly, and its atoms usually do not have time to organize into crystals. Sometimes crystals appear in pumice, but most of the structure is amorphous and the resulting volcanic glass is known as mineral. Pumice is composed of silicates and aluminates. Silicate and feldspar materials may include rhyolite, stalactite, andesite, galena, disk garnet, rhodolite, and (less commonly) basalt.
Although pumice comes in a variety of colors, the ones in circulation are almost always pale. Its original colors include white, gray, blue, cream, green and brown. The pores or vesicles in the rock come in two forms. Some vesicles are roughly spherical, while others are tubular.
Probably the most striking characteristic of pumice is its low density. Pumice is often so light that it floats on the water until its vesicles fill up and eventually sink. Pumice can float for several years before it sinks and may form huge floating islands. pumice from the 1883 Krakatoa eruption drifted for about 20 years. Pumice drift disrupts transport and is important for spreading marine life to new locations.
Fu Shi benefits

Fu Shi is also known as water flower, sea stone, water bubble stone, floating sea stone, floating water stone, or sheep's belly stone, the efficacy of pumice is to clear lung fire, resolve old phlegm, soften hardness, laxative, the role of pumice is to treat phlegm heat cough, old phlegm lumps, etc., pumice is contraindicated by the use of medicine is weak cold cough avoid taking, more to take damage to human blood, pumice is igneous rock type.
Fushi has a salty cold odor and is used to moisten the lower part of the body. Therefore, it enters the lung to remove phlegm and heat from the upper jiao, stop coughing and soften the firmness, and clear its upper source, so it also treats all kinds of gonorrhea.
Pumice generally has the effect of clearing lung fire and resolving old phlegm. Pumice contains a large amount of aluminum and potassium, sodium, and silicate chemical components, and its medicinal efficacy is very high, and pumice is salty and cold, can enter the lung and kidney meridian and large intestine meridian, to clear lung fire and old phlegm is its main effect. It is usually used to treat common diseases such as phlegm, cough and asthma, gonorrhea, sores, and hernia, and is usually effective in treatment.
Fu Shi side effects
When Fu Shi is used in high doses, it may cause adverse digestive reactions such as nausea and stomach discomfort.
The following should be noted when using Fushi.
a. Strictly grasp the contraindications: avoid taking it for a cold cough, and use it cautiously for those with spleen and stomach deficiency.
b. Strictly control the dosage, according to the condition and individual dosage, the dosage of sea fashion generally does not exceed 15 grams.
c. When long-term use of Hai Fu Shi and its preparations is required, the medicine should be used under the guidance of a physician to ensure safety and effectiveness.
Differences and commonalities between Fu Hai Shi and Hai Fu Shi
Fu Hai Shi and Hai Fu Shi have similar names, but their properties are quite different, and in some aspects, they have some commonalities.
Fu Hai Shi and Hai Fu Shi refer to the same substance. Fuhaishi is generally composed of silicates of aluminum, potassium, and sodium, and can also contain chlorine, magnesium, and other substances. It is also known as a stone flower, mainly calcium carbonate, and contains a small amount of magnesium, iron, and acid-insoluble substances. The Chinese medicine floating sea stone is the dried skeleton of the cycad, or the porous stone formed by the volcanic magma ejected. Haifushi, also known as floating stone, or sea pumice, produced on the coast of Guangdong, can be harvested throughout the year, pick up impurities, and dried in the sun. Both are pounded and used raw.
Fu Haishi is a kind of rock that erupted from a volcano, mainly composed of vitreous matter, occasionally containing a small number of crystalline minerals. However, the total chemical composition is similar to rhyolite, with silica as the main component, followed by alumina trioxide and potassium oxide. This product is the skeleton of a stony coral type (stone flower) or the stone formed by volcanic magma (pumice).
The chemical composition of Hai Fu Shi varies considerably. It is generally composed of silicates of aluminum, potassium, and sodium, i.e., a mineral similar to glass with SiOz as the main component. Since it is mostly extracted from seawater, it may also contain chlorine, magnesium, and other substances present in seawater. Pumice is mainly calcium carbonate, with small amounts of magnesium, iron, and acid-insoluble substances. The pumice is irregularly shaped and varies in size, usually from 2 to 7 cm in diameter, with some reaching 20 cm. The surface is rough, with many fine holes of different sizes, grayish white or grayish yellow. Hard and brittle, easy to smash, rough surface with small holes, some with silky luster or not.
Fu Shi TCM
Fu Shi is a porous stone formed by the solidification of magma ejected from volcanoes. It is mainly produced in Liaoning, Shandong, Fujian, Guangdong, and other places. It can be harvested all year round. It is fished from the sea, washed with water to remove salt and sand, and dried in the sun. The herb is preferred to be light grayish-white and light in the body.
