What is Shan Zha?

Deciduous trees of Shanzha, bark rough, dark gray or gray-brown; spines ca. 1-2 cm, sometimes unarmed; branchlets terete, current branches purple-brown, glabrous or subglabrous, sparsely lenticellate, older branches gray-brown; winter buds triangular-ovate, apex rounded-obtuse, glabrous, purple.


The leaf blade of Shan Zha is broadly ovate or triangular-ovate, sparsely rhombic-ovate, 5-10 cm long, 4-7.5 cm wide, shortly acuminate at the apex, truncate to broadly cuneate at the base, usually with 3-5 pinnate deep lobes on each side, lobes ovate-lanceolate or band-shaped, shortly acuminate at the apex, with sharp sparse irregularly biserrate margins, dark green and shiny above, sparsely pubescent along the veins or bearded in the axils of the veins below. Lateral veins 6-10 pairs, some reaching the apex of the lobes, some reaching the splitting of the lobes; petiole 2-6 cm long, glabrous; stipules herbaceous, falcate, margin serrate.
